Give your kids lessons about money that will last a lifetime.

Valuable Knowledge

Most experts agree that the earlier children learn about money, the better. That’s why Fifth Third Bank created the Young Bankers Club. The club is a financial literacy program that teaches children about the importance of good education, finances, and personal responsibility. The Young Bankers Club is for fifth-grade elementary school students and provides a customized curriculum that meets national educational standards for fifth-grade mathematics.

Taught in the Classroom

Young Bankers Club is taught inside school classrooms, often by a Fifth Third Bank employee/mentor, as a 5- or-10-week program. It can also be tailored to be taught by the teacher, or adapted to meet a teacher's own lesson plans. After completing the program, students earn a certificate of completion and are able to:

  • Identify what money is
  • Understand the difference between wants and needs
  • Make basic money calculations
  • Explore various careers and how much income they can earn
  • Learn the basics of the stock market
  • Understand the operations of a bank branch or financial center
  • Create budgets and study spending
  • Examine interest and credit cards
  • Practice managing a bank account
  • Learn how to create a business plan for a small business

Improving Lives Through L.I.F.E.

Our Lives Improved Through Financial Empowerment (L.I.F.E.) program does just that by delivering financial learning opportunities to people at all stages of life. As well as our Young Bankers Club, L.I.F.E. programs include:

  • Fifth Third Bank Financial Empowerment Mobiles—40-foot buses transform into mobile classrooms, teaching financial education
  • Empower U® —a financial education program taught to employees of Fifth Third Bank clients and in the community

"Thank you for taking time out from your job to come teach us. When you first came it was fun when we had to choose our own stock and record it. At first I didn't know what a stock was until you told us. I really thought money came from trees. I loved the part when we wrote our own checks. To get money you have to do chores to get what you need NOT want. Thank you for the field trip. I am so grateful and happy that we were one of the schools to get picked. In conclusion, it was fun having you here."

Taylor, Detroit, MI

"Hello. I am going to speak about my experience in the Young Bankers Club. I have learned so many things but the most important thing that I have learned is how to take care of my money and how to use it properly. Now that I know these things I can make deposits and cash checks. Now I can think about my future and the goals that will help me achieve my dreams."

"I would also like to thank Young Bankers for the field trips we went on. I'm not only thankful for the people that came to my school but thankful for the memories I now have. Now that I know how to cash checks and make deposits, I would like to say that it was my pleasure to participate in the Young Bankers Club. I wish the Young Bankers could be with us next year but there are still more kids who need to know all the things I have learned and I tell you again I wish I could be like my leader someday."

Jesse, Cincinnati, OH

"I don't think the kids even realized how much of a life skill they were learning at the time. They have to know how to find the percentage of something and how to add or subtract it from their bank balance. This type of teaching pulls everything together."

Paula, a teacher at Holmes Elementary School, Ypsilanti, MI

"Young Bankers Club taught our kids that they can't have all the designer clothes. We have to live within our means. I thought that was really powerful."

Brian, a teacher at Malcolm X Academy, Detroit, MI
